During the 2014 Blinded Veterans Association Winter Board Meeting, the assembled board members reviewed a proposal urging the establishment of a committee or working group for technology. The proposal described the advances in this realm, and the potential impacts for Veterans. Until this point, Veterans with visual impairments simply relied on the Department of Veterans Affairs to direct how and what devices Veterans might receive.
Acknowledging that more must be done, the Board agreed to recognize the creation of a special interest group for technology. The Technology Association for Veterans with Visual Impairments (TAVVI) formed in response to this action. However, the BVA’s board of directors expressed very little concern in the outcomes of the group, which consisted of several public demonstrations, our first monthly teleconferencing initiative, and one on one training with blinded Veterans. The lack of support from the Blinded Veterans Association forced the team to disband and reform as the Blind Vet Tech Team. At the current time, we consist of visually impaired Veterans and non-Veterans assisting Veterans with visual impairments learn about and integrate assistive technologies into their lives.
With so many resources available on the WWW, we will provide various links and resources of interest for consumers and professionals of technology related to blind rehab.
